Spring Is Here. Is Your Water Softener System Ready?
March 20, 2026
Winter is hard on your water softener. After months of working overtime against mineral-heavy water, your system needs a proper check-up.
Start With the Salt
Total Dissolved Solids refers to the combined amount of dissolved substances present in water. These substances can include calcium, magnesium, iron, and other minerals. These compounds dissolve into your water supply as it moves through soil, rock, and plumbing systems. TDS is measured in parts per million (ppm), and the higher the number, the more dissolved solids are present in the water.
What Should Your TDS Level Be?
Open the brine tank and make sure it is at least one quarter full. Top it off with high-quality salt as needed. While there, look for a salt bridge. It’s a hardened crust above the water line that tricks your system into thinking the tank is full when it isn’t. If you discover you have one, gently break it up. Lastly, if the salt looks sludgy or discolored, it's time for a full cleanout. You should also remove salt buildup outside the tank and wipe it down as well.
Check Settings and Look for Leaks
Daylight saving time can throw off regeneration schedules every year. Confirm your system clock is accurate and your cycle settings are correct. Next, do a walk-around, checking hoses, valves, and fittings for moisture or pooling water. If you find a leak, call our partner Action Plumbing.
Flush, Filter, and Don't Forget the Water Heater
Run a manual regeneration to clear out mineral buildup after heavy winter usage. Check your pre-filters, most need replacement every three to six months. And if it's been a while since your water heater was flushed, spring is the right time. Mineral deposits quietly reduce efficiency and shorten the life of the unit.
